Recovery & results

A comprehensive recovery guide for Himplant® patients — what to expect day by day, when you can return to normal activities, and how results develop over time.

1 week Light Activity
4–6 wk Full Recovery
3–6 mo Final Results

Recovery Overview

The Himplant procedure is an outpatient surgery, and most patients return home within a few hours. Recovery is generally straightforward, but following Dr. Robbins’ post-operative instructions closely is essential for optimal healing and the best possible outcome.

Swelling and mild discomfort are normal and expected during the first few weeks. The implant will feel firm initially and gradually soften as tissues settle around the device. Final results are typically visible between three and six months after surgery.

Recovery Timeline

Day 1 – Day 3
Immediate Post-Operative Period
Expect moderate swelling and bruising, which is entirely normal. A JP drain (small tube and collection bulb) may be placed at the lower abdomen to allow antibiotic fluid to exit — this is typically removed during your follow-up visit on day 3–4. A compression sleeve (UroWrap) is applied and should be worn at all times per Dr. Robbins’ instructions. Prescription pain medication and antibiotics will keep you comfortable and reduce infection risk. Sponge baths only while the JP drain is in place; the surgical area must remain dry. Rest with minimal movement. You should be able to walk to the bathroom independently.
Day 4 – Day 7
First Week Milestones
Swelling begins to decrease noticeably. JP drain is removed during your follow-up visit (typically day 3–4). You may transition from prescription pain medication to over-the-counter options as discomfort subsides. Light walking around your home or hotel is encouraged. Showering is permitted after the drain is removed — gently rinse the genital area but avoid submerging. Continue wearing the compression sleeve (UroWrap). You will notice dissolvable sutures and white strips at the incision line; these will fall off naturally within approximately two weeks. Dr. Robbins will see you for follow-up visits during this period to examine the surgical site and check healing progress.
Week 2 – Week 3
Gradual Return to Routine
Most patients can return to desk work and light daily activities by the end of week two. Swelling continues to diminish, though some residual puffiness is normal. No heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or strenuous physical activity during this period. The incision should be kept clean and dry as instructed.
Week 4 – Week 6
Activity Clearance
At your follow-up appointment around week four, Dr. Robbins will evaluate your healing and determine when you are cleared for exercise, sexual activity, and other physical pursuits. Most patients receive clearance for sexual activity between four and six weeks post-surgery. The implant will begin to feel softer and more natural as tissues integrate around the device.
Month 2 – Month 3
Results Taking Shape
Residual swelling has largely resolved. The implant settles into its final position, and the girth enhancement becomes more defined and natural-looking. Sensation continues to normalize. Most patients feel comfortable and confident by this stage.
Month 3 – Month 6
Final Results
Full tissue healing is achieved. The implant has fully integrated and feels soft and natural. The final girth result is now visible. There are no restrictions on physical or sexual activity. Dr. Robbins may schedule a final follow-up to confirm everything has healed optimally.

Activity Restrictions

  • No Sexual Activity

Sexual intercourse and masturbation must be avoided until Dr. Robbins provides explicit clearance, typically at 4–6 weeks.

  • No Heavy Exercise

Weightlifting, running, cycling, and high-intensity workouts should be avoided for at least 4 weeks. Light walking is encouraged from day one.

  • No Submerging the Incision

Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and saunas until the incision is fully healed. Showers are permitted after the dressing is removed.

  • No Alcohol or Smoking

Alcohol should be avoided while taking prescription medications. Smoking and nicotine products impair blood flow and slow healing — cessation is strongly recommended.

Important Post-Operative Care Details

  • Progress Photo Reporting

Patients are required to email progress photos to the clinic every week for the first 6–8 weeks. Monthly updates are sufficient thereafter. This is essential for Dr. Robbins to monitor your healing remotely and address any concerns early.

  • Compression Sleeve (UroWrap)

A post-operative compression sleeve is provided and should be worn at all times per Dr. Robbins’ instructions. The sleeve is your primary barrier against infection and supports proper healing. It should be changed and replaced as directed during follow-up visits.

  • Skin Care

Use non-scented, hypoallergenic, vitamin-enriched lotion on the skin to maintain moisture and prevent chafing. Do not shave the area with a razor — electric trimmers are acceptable. Watch for signs of irritation or yeast infection (candida) and notify the office if observed.

  • Supportive Undergarments

Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as boxer briefs or sweatpants. A jock strap or similar scrotal support may be recommended for the first 3–4 weeks to provide additional comfort and stability.

  • Nutritional Supplements

To support maximum healing, Dr. Robbins recommends daily supplementation with L-Arginine (1000 mg, three times daily) and L-Citrulline (500–750 mg daily). These supplements are available over the counter and support healthy blood flow and tissue recovery.

Manufacturer Warranty

The Himplant device is backed by a manufacturer warranty that covers the implant itself. Specific warranty terms, duration, and coverage details will be discussed during your consultation and provided in writing before surgery. The warranty provides additional assurance that the device is built to last.

It is important to note that the manufacturer warranty covers the device, not the surgical procedure or associated medical costs. Dr. Robbins will explain exactly what is and is not included so there are no surprises.

When to Contact Our Office

While complications are uncommon, you should contact Dr. Robbins’ office immediately if you experience any of the following during recovery:

  • Signs of Infection

Increasing redness, warmth, or spreading discoloration around the incision; drainage of pus or foul-smelling fluid; fever above 101°F (38.3°C).

  • Unusual Swelling or Pain

Sudden, severe swelling that worsens rather than improves; pain that increases after the first few days rather than gradually diminishing.

  • Difficulty Urinating

Inability to urinate, significant pain during urination, or blood in the urine beyond the first day or two.

Dr. Robbins and his team are available by phone during and after business hours for post-operative concerns. You are never alone during recovery.
